Daily Poker Tip

June 11, 2006 - A solid strategy for beginners to Texas Hold'em Tournament play is to play very tight at the beginning rounds of the tournament. The reason for this, is that the blinds are going to be relatively small, so you won't get hurt folding marginal or suspect hands. The small blinds in the early rounds are also make it pointless to try and steal the blinds. In the early rounds, it is better to wait for good table position, and only play a select few hands. Many of your opponents will whittle their chip stacks down from stupid play far faster than the blinds. And with the reduced limits, the early winners are not going to gain such a lead to justify suspect play, you should be able to reel them in the latter rounds. One point to remember, if you do land AA or KK, make the most of it, and get yourself some cushion.

Repeat after me... tight aggressive poker players win tournaments. This is obviously a generalization, but the fact remains that the style lends itself perfectly to tournament play. A tight aggressive player mitigates their risk, by reducing the number of hands they play and by waiting for a certain level of quality before committing. The aggressive player is able to push the envelope and win hands unchallenged or steal blinds. If you want to be successful at tournament play, there are a number of things to keep in mind, but the most important is that your style can not be too safe or fearful. Develop your instincts and the poker table, and then learn to trust them. This is perhaps the most valuable skill that you can employ during a poker tournament. Tournament play is a different animal from ring games, a tournament player needs to come to the table with a strategy and follow it to a tee. When you play in a ring game, there is not beginning or end, no finite number of chips, the game is on going and opponents come and go. In tournament play though, there is a beginning and end, and players are eliminate one by one, much like a battle. Great tournament players understand this difference, and follow a strategy, somewhat like a poker General, never deviating from the goal and exploiting opportunities when strongest, while mitigating losses while weakest. Always remember to go into a a tournament with a plan, and to follw that plan through out. That does not mean to play in a rigid, and predictable manner, as some would attribute too much planning, rather to establish a plan of attack, and how and when to commit you resources.

Never drink and deal! Ever! Perhaps the is nothing more enjoyable than meeting with a couple of buddies, lighting up a Cohiba and topping it off with a glass of Glenlivet, neat. Great... just don't play poker for money... Unless you plan to lose. The surprising thing is that many people make it a part of their playing style to sit down at a poker table with a drink, and it affects their judgement. Simply put, you are a much weaker player under the influence than you are sober. Enjoy a drink or two, but wait until after you play poker. And always look for the player at the table who is drinking, and analyze his or her play, they will become more predictable, and are susceptible to going on tilt. Perhaps the most difficult skill to teach a poker player is DISCIPLINE. It is one of those things that comes naturally to some, and is almost devoid in others. But make no mistake, a winning poker player will display discipline at the poker table. Why? Simply put, a disciplined player will be able to maintain a strategy and not deviate. This helps to maintain an advantage whenever a player gets involved in a hand. A disciplined player may still lose their hand, but over many hands they will make decisions that are less about emotion, and more about logic, and discipline and logic are a formidable combination.
